What's everyones favourite season?
Alot of people seem to like 4 5 or 6 the best, and it has to be said that season 6 is almost perfect. But for me the stand out season is season 8. Yes, Walker has gone and the platoon looks a bit past its prime, but the episodes are all top notch. Ring Dem Bells is my favourite Dad's Army episode ever. Pikes impersonation of a German officer is classic and their antics in the pub are first class. The other 5 episodes are all really good, and the 2 christmas specials can really be classed as season 8 as well.
I really don't like season 1 and 2 that much (although there are some good episodes) and season 3 is still a bit too rough round the edges, but from then on (particulary the last 4 seasons) are really great.
Welcome to the forum. Your question was worthy of a poll, so I have created one so that we could see more easily which are our favourites.
For what it's worth, I like the Walker seasons but my favourite season is Series Three. They just about had the formula right by then. I felt that they were running out of steam by the end of Series 8. Series 8 had "Ring Dem Bells", "Is There Honey Still For Tea" and My Brother And I" but apart from them, I thought the rest were poor in comparison.
I agree with Dave, although I'd push it a bit further and say they peaked consistency -wise at about 4 or 5. However my favourite episodes all come much later surprisingly, when they had the confidence to diversify into different plot ideas and exlpore the characters.
I think season 9 was one season too many (with the exception of 'Never Too Old') and season 8 was not too strong either. Seeing the physical deterioration of the 2 main actors was pretty hard to watch. Particulalry when you look back at how vigorously some of the parts were played at their peak.
Season 3-7 were the glory years - and that's a lot of episodes to write and get such generally great results.
I thought that the only reason John looked thin was because he was made to stop drinking by his doctor. So although he looked rather unwell he was infact better off health wise than in the earlier seasons? Is that right?

Apparently he was so fed up with not being able to drink that he said he'd rather prefer a small amount of drink than none at all and he soon put a bit of weight back on and looked a lot healthier when Dad's Army finished. Thankfully he had another 6 years of better-quality life after it.
I must admit much as I love them all, the episodes pre to James Beck's tragic death are all about what Dads Army was really about in my oppinion! Season 9, although still good, was distinctly more depressing than the rest to see John Le Mesurier lookng so ill (I am a huge fan of his still). I think season 4 was probably the best, my fav all time episode being The Big Parade, although season 3 was also exceptional!

For the very best of Dads Army you have to look at that golden period of the early 70s (1970 - 1975) This also happens to be when the likes of Porridge and Steptoe & Son were at their peak also. For Dads Army this represents seasons 4 to 8. As for a favourite single season I am torn between seasons 4 and 8. Season 4 for consistency of output is hard to beat and there are some absolute classics on there but Season 8 despite only having 6 episodes in it is worth watching from start to finish - not a weak episode on it.
