Just a look!

Hi all,

Just thinking aloud after watching 'The Miser's Hoard'.

I absolutely adore that little look on Frazers face when the Dr has discovered the gold sovereigns.

It's the shot right at the end of that opening chapter. Frazer rolls his eyes with a very furtive, yet sheepish look on his face.

Classic stuff.

I also have noticed a few of these classic 'glares' or 'looks' from Jonesy.

There is a funny stare, or 'look' from Jone's in 'Absent Friends' during the roll call.

Jone's has just gone back to the (somewhat empty) ranks and is making rather a noisy fuss with his drill, settles down, then delivers Cpt Mainwaring this classic stare.

Any others worth a mention?

Thats what makes DA so good. It often gets a laugh from the subtle, less obvious visual gag and not a word need be spoken.

The delivery of these by the likes of Clive Dunn and John Laurie is simply priceless.

Cheers,

Paul.  Smile

Well there are many, but Capt. Mainwaring was always the best (for me anyway).  Just his looks when someone from the platoon says something silly.

Like when Fraser says the joke about the old empty barn - Mainwaring face was good then, in that he didn't really want to hear it but said yes anyway.

The look Wilson gave Pike in the Deadly Attachment always makes me smile, when Wilson wanted Pike to get the gun, and not tell Mainwaring about the grenades not being primed properly.

Frasers face after he shouts his poem to the Americans in My British Buddy is a classic too.

There are so many occassions in Dad's Army when looks say a thousand words.  A Miser's Hoard is just one that makes use of John Laurie's innate talent to convey Frazer's thoughts - most of which I don't think would be broadcastable!

I hadn't seen this episode of ages until I reviewed it for a recent podcast - and thought the two Johns were absolutely supreme - Le Mes for his drunk acting and Laurie for his face of fifty thousand expressions!
