The phrase 'Dad's Army': 1940's or 1960's?

Question Does anybody know when the phrase 'Dad's Army' actually dates from? I have never seen it used in any wartime books, films or immediate post-war Home Guard unit histories.

I know Jimmy Perry once said that Bill Cotton(?) Head of BBC Comedy in the 1960's suggested the title, so is it a case of the show's title suffers the same misconception as the song - the public both think they were invented during the war but were actually from the 1960's? Question
Dave Homewood

It was in fact Head of Light Entertainment Michael Mills who coined the phrase whilst suggesting a better title than The Fighting Tigers. I understand it had not been used before then and it was his own invention somewhat off the cuff but was so good it stuck.
