Watching this episode I was struck by how much better the picture quality was. I'm not an expert but I believe that they normally used Video tape for the studio scenes and Film for the outside scenes. Perhaps they used Film for both inside and out for this episode ? Anyway watching it , it's much sharper. It's also edited in a more cinematic way with more quick cuts to cast members faces. I'm half way through we know our Onions which seems to be mostly external work , so I can't yet say if the rest of the series adopts this style.

I think it was mentioned in one of the interviews on the DVDs that standard procedure was videotape for studio segments and film for location sequences. Will have to watch Royal Train again and pay more attention to picture quality, as I hadn't noticed this difference before.

Years and years ago (when I was a kid), I distinctly* recall watching this episode and noticing a large furniture-type van with the BBC logo briefly visible through a window in the station, obviously an OB van parked up for location filming.
I've watched the episode several times since without seeing it, and wondered if they cut it on later transmissions, because it was quite obvious?
*it could well have been another TV comedy series, and yet it is a distinct memory for me...
PS i know, this belongs in the "bloopers" section.

The 'Pump Trolley' used in this episode is still in existence and been renovated.
