Who is your favourite Dad's Army actor?

Exactly what it says! Vote for your favourite of the regular Dads Army actors. Feel free to make a post giving your reasons for your particular choice.
David Doherty

Its almost impossible to vote!

Thats the measure of how much each actor was needed to make the whole thing come alive. Every single one of them had such a huge part to play in making it work!

It is a bit unfair, I know, to ask people to choose a favourite. However, as sure as eggs are eggs, somebody will ask this question, hence the poll! Wink

I suppose my choice of Clive Dunn has been swayed by my memories of when I met him at Bressingham one year. Watching him on Dad's Army has never been the same since!

I always thought Janet Davies was an unsung hero. Mrs Pike wasn't the best charcter to play at times but she always acted the role superbly and I feel she never got the recognition she should have.

Each of them had their own style but I always felt that John Laurie was using his Shakespeare talents here in the best way - sort of exasperated all the time.
Mr Le Mesurier, I recall seeing in, I think a BBC magazine, was always like that in real life too (even when he was int he army!) so, was he always acting or did he never need to act?!

I am currently constructing an essay on why Arthur Lowe was a television god and should have been knighted / made monarch of a small country. This could take a while... but in the meantime... "Damn revolving doors"

ps. Can't wait to be a vicar. I always hated the town clerk.

You have to be a verger first Jo and hope you are qualified....... you cant be a verger with a funny face!

I myself am fed up walking around with this morbid look on my face......

Well I've been in practice by going about my daily tasks with a duster tucked into my belt. Causes a few glances when I'm in a wetsuit. Cool
Ps. What's a moderator?
Pps. Who's 'Muller', is that a DA quote?
David Doherty

Oooohhh stop teasing! A wet suit and duster! I'm beginning to sound like Colonel Strohm from 'Allo 'Allo (but that of course is for another forum!)

A moderator helps things run smoothly: I am able to split posts, delete posts, move posts to correct forum etc.

Davecov being the site owner and "The Boss" has of course the ultimate say!

The Muller is Captain Muller from "The Deadly Attachment". In the radio show Mainwaring calls to him, "Can you hear me Muller?" and Pike says, "You sound just like Sandy Powell, "Can you hear me Mother?!""

Well.... i thought it was funny anyway!
jo

Ah, classic! I had to listen to that again to believe you! Not sure I've ever actually listened to it before? Funny since Bill Pertwee mentions in his book that Arthur Lowe seemed to be influenced by Sandy Powell... da da daaa Shocked

Hi, I'm new here but have been a fan of Dads Army for at lest the past 8 years! I love John Le Mesurier, so naturally he recieved my vote! Wilson is by far my fav character and John portrayed him so amacably! What a lovely man he was! One of my fav actors of all time, and a huge inspiration of mine!  Very Happy
The Midnight Special

I have several "favourites" in the cast, most of the main actors are excellent comedy/character actors. But just edging it is John Laurie. His trademark soliloquies are fantastic and I think very few actors would be able to emulate him in this regard.
