The Midnight Special

Who was lying, Mainwaring or Wilson?

I'm currently working my way through the 14 DVD set in chronological order (currently I'm watching early episodes from series 5) and I've noticed a recurring theme, in a few episodes, regarding some piece of kit or other which is needed. I don't remember the details of each case, but it goes something like this :

Mainwaring : Wilson, where's so and so?
Wilson : I didn't bring it.
Mainwaring : I distinctly told you to bring it.
Wilson : The word didn't pass your lips.

What's that all about then? Obviously one of them is lying in each case. But which, and why? Or is it not known?

I so remember that exchange . .  except what it was !  Surprised
The Midnight Special

It's a different thing in each case, and I think they always improvise. I've been thinking about this and maybe Mainwaring is right and Wilson, being Wilson, just doesn't bother listening half the time.

Sort of like most husbands and wives!

Yes,

Torches, Guns, Bibles.

Mainwaring   'I distinctly remember giving you the ****'

Wilson   "But the word **** never passed your lips"

It's a recurring theme throughout several episodes.

I think just a convenient vehicle to demonstrate the contrast  between the two characters and Mainwarings supposed authority and superiority over a somewhat laid back and "couldn't really give a damn" attitude of Sgt Wilson.

In the end, its just showing how lax Cpt Mainwaring really is, as he  tries to blame his forgetfullness and incompetence on his Sargeant (who is far too intelligent and switched on to make the same errors if he were Captain).
