Wilson in Officer's uniform

One of the amusing sequences was when Wilson turned up in an Officer's uniform which out-ranked Capt. Mainwaring. The look on Mainwaring's face said it all! I think that this only occured once in the series, possibly when the men were attending some civil function or other.
Can anyone remember this please?

Hi Ron,

It was the very last episode of Dad's Army - "Never Too Old" - and the platoon attend the wedding of Lance Corporal Jones and Mrs Fox. Sergeant Wilson does indeed turn up in the uniform of an Army Captain! Wilson explains he was a Captain in the First World War and Mainwaring, nose out of joint, says "doesn't count for anything now".

I have often wondered as to why Wilson was seemingly stripped of his commission after A. Wilson. Manager?

The size of the Walmington platoon should not have come into it.

He was must have been the only honourably decommissioned officer in history!

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the info.
I seem to remember that Wilson's officer's uniform had a slightly French or Polish Officer's look about it. But then it was a dress uniform.
All the best,
Ron.

Dont forget.... in the last episode he was wearing a First World War officers uniform! They do look slightly odd!

In one of the first episodes Wilson says something along the lines of "I was a sergeant in the....." and Mainwaring stops him "Never mind that". Maybe he would have gone on to mention his pips if he hadn't been interrupted. I think this scene was a perfect end to Dads Army - it seemed to sum up all that went on between those two in a few simple strokes - Wilson gaining the upper hand but content to sit back and let Mainwaring shout him down once more. It's a real shame that Le Mesurier looked so ill in the last series.

That puzzled me, too, especially considering that at the end of the episode Mainwaring tells Wilson he has had a word with GHQ and they're quite agreeable to your keeping your rank.  Maybe Mainwaring was referring to the rank of sergeant, but I fail to see what had happened that could possibly have called into question Wilson's original rank.
