@ Swallow Bank, I first saw Dad's Army here in Germany after a friend in England sent a video of "The Day the Balloon Went Up" and the two associate episodes. I loved it from Day 1!
Funny that I had to come to Germany to discover this great 'wartime' classic! My wife (she's German) also finds them hilarious
Hi, I'm a Dad's Army fan from Australia. I was just a kid when it was shown here in the 1970s but my family loved it, especially my parents who both served in the RAAF during WWII. I was really pleased to discover a couple of years ago that the episodes were out on video, and later DVD. I bought a couple (and one for my parents) and when rewatching them was amazed at how wonderful the comedy was, far surpassing most of what passes for comedy these days . I love everything about it from the song at the beginning to the all clear siren at the end. When I was little I used to have to get Mum and Dad to explain things to me, like what an ARP warden was. I learned a lot about the war and that era in history from Dad's Army - what a fun way to learn! Great characters and a good combination of slapstick and other more subtle humour and no need to resort to sarcasm, belittling people or swear words to generate humour. Top stuff! . Glad to have found this forum to chat with other fans . (Although I have to confess I don't have the whole collection yet ).
I have been a member here for a little while, and known Dave Coventry for many years. I only just discoverd this thread and thought I'd add to it:
Name: Dave Homewood
Age: 37
Location: New Zealand
Favourite Films: There are too many to note down, but I like well made, well acted films. I like aviation films a lot, Battle of Britain especially. I'm really looking forward to the NZ remake of The Dam Busters.
Favourite TV: The Simpsons, Dad's Army, Band of Brothers, history documentaries, Only Fools and Horses, anything with Ronnie Barker or David Jason, Blackadder, lots of stuff really. Old British comedies are the best but these days few of them are worthwhile
Favourite Comedies: see above
Favourite Music: Definately 1930's and 1940's swing music, especially Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, etc. Other 1940's music. Also Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and numerous other bands and genres. Best tune ever - Sing,Sing, Sing by Benny Goodman and his Orchestra
Other Interests: Aviation, photography, film making
